Plans for a Tesla style battery factory in Queensland

27 Jun Plans for a Tesla style battery factory in Queensland

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk returned from her visit to Tesla’s lithium-ion battery Gigafactory this week with a plan to push for a battery factory in Queensland.

The Tesla style factory would supply batteries to assist with powering homes and businesses and has the potential to create thousands of jobs and attract investment. It would also contribute towards the State Government 50% renewable target by 2030.

Tesla’s is recognised for their electric cars and energy storage and their Gigafactory has created close to 10,000 jobs at the Nevada-based factory.

Ms Palaszczuk said that she wanted a similar plant to be set up in Queensland and her cabinet has approved for the Government to look at encouraging a battery factory in Queensland.

Ms Palaszczuk said that a battery factory was the “missing jigsaw piece”. “Of course, it won’t be of that (Tesla) scale, but I can see what it does to the economy in terms of jobs, in terms of then attracting other big companies as well.”
