The Gold Coast Aquatic Centre which will be the swimming and diving facility for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games is now powered by solar. Dynalec Renewable Energy were the installers for the 312kW solar array which will help to power the Commonwealth Games.

The Gold Coast Aquatic centre is a world-class swimming facility located in Southport.

The system comprises of more than 1100 panels and is estimated to generate $100,000 worth of power per year therefore saving rate payers.

Mayor Tom Tate unveiled the new solar PV system. “We are well into our program of energy saving initiatives to tackle ever facet of our energy consumption, and drive home savings for the ratepayer. Our annual electricity expenditure has almost doubled over the past 10 years and we need to reduce our reliance on the current system by investing in alternative energy sources. My wish is that other countries and territories take this idea and have green and affordable energy as well.” Cr Tate added.

Dynalec commenced the 312kW installation in October and took just under 2 months to complete. This install represents one of the largest solar arrays installed for the City.

The solar array was split over three rooftops and communications were set up so visitors to the Aquatic Centre can see exactly how much energy is being produced via an LED screen upon entry.

Michael, Dynalec’s commercial installer for this project said “It’s encouraging to see a high-profile site such as the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre set an example for a sustainable path, not only for our city but globally with the exposure the Commonwealth Games will bring.”

The brief for this Gold Coast project was to install a solar PV system with battery storage that would allow the customer to store excess power produced by the panels for use at night or during an outage. The customer was eager to become one of the early adopters of the Powerwall 2 so we designed a 5.4kW system that would easily integrate with the Powerwall. With its 13.5kWh battery storage capacity and backup power function, Powerwall met the required purpose to self-power this Bonogin customer’s home at an affordable price.

Tesla Powerwall 2 install Gold Coast

The project commenced in two phases as we awaited the arrival of the Powerwall 2. A 5.4kW solar PV system was designed and installed along with a SolarEdge inverter and SolarEdge optimisers to overcome shading issues. Stage 2 of the project was the Powerwall 2 which installed easily and mounted seamlessly on the wall inside the customer’s garage. Within 24 hours the customer started achieving up to 99% self-consumption which he monitored via the Tesla app.

The Tesla app provides the customer full visibility with built-in monitoring of battery levels, PV production, remaining backup power and self-consumption data. Staying protected during a grid outage is simplified with the customisation option allowing you to reserve a percentage of your Powerwall to protect the home. With software updates sent directly to the app, the Powerwall will continue to improve over time as it adapts to the customer’s lifestyle.

Tesla Powerwall 2 has arrived and is radically changing the way households use, store and manage their power. Dynalec Renewable Energy is at the forefront of the Powerwall 2 demand becoming the first in South East Qld to install a Powerwall 2 on a 3 phase Brisbane residence and among one of the first to install Powerwall 2 on the Gold Coast for single-phase customers.

Brisbane Powerwall 2 install

Dynalec Renewable Energy’s battery storage expert Michael explained: “while we had completed several Powerwall 2 installations on the Gold Coast for single-phase customers, this was the first 3 phase residence to have Powerwall 2 approved on the Energex grid in South East QLD.”

Brisbane Solar PV and Powerwall 2 Project

For this Brisbane project, a 7.56kW tilt frame solar PV system was installed prior the arrival of the Powerwall 2. The panels were tilted to 15 degrees to minimise the visual impact to this architecturally designed home from the street. A Fronius 8.2kW 3 phase inverter was installed to ensure compliance with current Energex guidelines when installing Powerwall 2.

This residence had two existing electrical boards, the most important loads to be backed up in the case of an outage were identified and moved from the first switchboard to the garage switchboard to allow these essential loads to backed-up by the Powerwall. Two monitoring devices were then set up on the solar array and main switchboard which gave the customer full visibility via the app.

Brisbane Solar PV and Powerwall 2 Project

Powerwall is a battery designed to reduce your reliance on the grid by allowing you to store 14kWh of solar energy to run your home day and night. In the event of a grid outage, your home will be protected with seamless and reliable backup power. With Powerwall, you can manage and control your home energy via a real-time Tesla app.

Visibility via the Tesla App

The App allows the Powerwall owner to monitor real-time data from solar power generation from afar through a new Power Flow screen, which provides an overview of household energy storage and consumption. Checking the system’s status and controlling settings such as a minimum energy reserve in case of a grid outage are all functions of the app.

Audio: ABC

If the Government was serious about reducing increasing electricity prices they would throw more support around solar and battery storage (also known as distributed energy) rather than seeking to subsidise dated coal-fired power stations.

Leading energy analyst Bruce Mountain says “the combination of solar and battery storage is already cheaper than grid prices for most consumers in South Australia, and it wouldn’t take much effort or expense to make it so in other states too”.

The federal government claims that driving AGL to keep open the run-down Liddell power station will lead to greater reliability and lower electricity prices, despite what most analysts and energy companies are saying will do the opposite.

“If the federal government is determined to deliver lower electricity prices, it might focus its efforts on ensuring that demand is more responsive to short-term price signals, and on making up the narrowing shortfall needed to encourage widespread uptake of distributed batteries,” Mountain says in a presentation to an energy forum in Melbourne.

“Such policies will not be difficult to develop or implement, they will require outlays many times smaller than those needed to build baseload coal plants, and will show results during the term of a government.”

AEMO boss Audrey Zibelman views renewables as critical to lowering prices, creating a smarter, cleaner and more reliable grid than the system which now relies heavily on centralised generation and extended networks which is vulnerable to catastrophic failure of equipment, storms, and bushfires.

The government is very aware of the benefits of solar and battery storage, with many politicians turning to renewables for their own homes.

“One of the few constants in Australia’s energy debate is the fervor of politicians’ and administrators’ homage to the idea that electricity prices should be lower than they are,” Mountain says.

“That electricity prices have reached the level they have, suggests the homage has all too often been a camouflage for other agendas”.

“For too long ideology and the protection of vested interests has lurked behind the apparent pursuit of “lower electricity prices”. The obsession with coal-fired “baseload” generation is an enduring manifestation of this malaise.”

The sustainability of the coal fleet is dependant on its ability to operate continuously and this is being exposed by the emergence of more current, cheaper technologies, such as solar and batteries, costing around one-sixth the price of grid-supplied electricity.

“It is no surprise that photovoltaics are now being installed at record rates not just on household roofs but also on farms and in businesses.”

“If the federal government is really committed to doing something about electricity prices, yesterday’s heroes must be put out to pasture. Those calling the shots must drop the ideology and find the gumption to put the customer first indeed, not just in word.”

Governments have the ability to accelerate the installation of solar and batteries and while householders will be the main beneficiary it will also aid the entire network.

Regional Queenslanders with solar systems up to 30kW will now benefit from changes introduced by the Palaszczuk Government as part of the $1.16 billion Powering Queensland Plan, designed to support and grow the renewable energy sector.

Up to 4000 regional households and small businesses are now eligible to receive the Queensland regional feed-in-tariff for systems up to 30kW in size. The cap was set at 5kW and it is now expected that many more will take up the offer and install large solar systems.

Treasurer and Acting Minster for Energy Curtis Pitt said “by increasing the solar system size limit for the regional feed-in tariff (FiT) from 5 kilowatts (kW) to 30 kW of total rated inverter capacity, 4000 more Queensland households and businesses would be eligible.”

“Expanding the eligibility for the regional FiT to small photovoltaic generators with a total rated inverter capacity up to 30 kW will enable more regional Queenslanders to receive fair payment for excess energy exported from their solar PV system to the electricity grid,” Mr Pitt said.

“Importantly, because the regional FiT is set by the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) at an economically efficient, cost-neutral rate based on market energy costs, there is no additional expense to non-solar customers.

“It’s great news for those 4000 solar customers not previously eligible for the FiT and great news for regional Queensland households and businesses considering solar.

“Many businesses who have been considering solar will now be able to take advantage of the regional FiT for excess power they export when their businesses are closed.

“By encouraging solar uptake we are one step closer to the state’s solar target for one million residential rooftops or 3000 megawatts by 2020.

“Put simply – this initiative is a great outcome for customers and for the renewable energy industry.”

“There are now 20 renewable energy projects in Queensland either commencing construction or finalising commercial arrangements, collectively with almost 1800 megawatts capacity, supporting more than 2,800 direct construction jobs in regional Queensland and providing a $3.4 billion investment boost,” he said.

The Queensland Labor government has begun its large scale energy storage auction (Renewables 400 Auction) and called for early registration of companies wanting to tender for the installation of up to 100MW of energy storage and 400MW of new solar and wind farms before 2020.

The auction was officially launched in early August and forms part of the Palaszczuk Government’s ‘Powering Queensland Plan’ which aims to assist the state meet its 50 per cent renewable energy target by 2030 – a scheme worth $1.6 billion.

The Premier visited the Brisbane factory of lead-acid battery maker Century Batteries and said the plan included a “specific process” to secure up to 100MW of energy storage before 2020. It is expected the Century Batteries will apply for the upcoming reverse auction and the Premier said she welcomed Century Batteries’ interest in key initiatives of her Government.

“Energy storage will play an important role in the transition to higher levels of renewable energy and this process will support the accelerated deployment of this important technology,” the Premier said.

Treasurer and Acting Energy Minister Curtis Pitt explained that through the reverse auction process, companies would bid for Queensland government support for both renewable generation and storage projects – the majority of which would be located in the state’s regions.

“This early registration provides adequate time to ensure they are ready to hit the ground running when the process opens,” Minister Pitt said.

“Successful bidders will be awarded financial contracts with the government for some or all of the electricity they generate which will provide them with long-term certainty allowing them to secure the financing required to deliver their project.”

“The ‘reverse’ nature of the auction process means that companies are encouraged to bid for the lowest price necessary to support their project.”

Priority will be given to projects that supported local jobs and businesses, and “with a view to creating a diverse mix of renewable energy generation and storage to support a secure, reliable and affordable supply of electricity into the future.”

In this way, he said, the Palaszczuk government hoped to continue the “unprecedented momentum” in new renewable energy investment and energy storage that had finally begun to gather across the state, which up until recently, Australia’s “Sunshine State” – has had very little large-scale renewable energy to speak of.

The past 18 months has seen 17 new projects financially committed in Queensland, including $2.3 billion of investment and 2,200 construction jobs.

“Energy is undergoing a transformational change in the way it is generated, transported and used and as a government, you have to plan for that and not stick your head in the sand and pretend our only option is expensive coal-fired power stations anymore,” he said on Monday.

The Queensland Government introduced an Amendment Bill to Queensland Parliament on 15 June 2017, designed to provide clearer rules for householders receiving the 44c Feed-in Tariff (FiT) wanting to integrate batteries and maintain their 44c-eligible system.

The new Bill would allow customers to retain their tariff when integrating batteries or additional panels with their current 44c-eligible systems. Whilst this Bill is yet to be passed, it is likely to be debated in Parliament in late August or early September 2017.

Currently adding battery storage to a 44c-eligible system would result in a forfeiture of the customers lucrative FIT.

The Government has described these changes as a significant step towards bringing the laws up to date with evolving technologies such as battery systems, which were not a factor when the Solar Bonus Scheme was initially introduced.

Minister for Energy and Water Supply Mark Bailey said that with an array of new technologies now available to homeowners, the changes reflected a need for Queensland laws to ‘move with the times’.

Image: Cairns Post

“With the new wave of renewable technology emerging, we want to ensure Queensland law provides certainty to those wanting to embrace energy storage and also maintain their 44cFiT eligibility,” Mr Bailey said.

“Solar rooftops combined are now our largest power station in Queensland, and declining costs and technology breakthroughs have the battery storage market poised for substantial growth – just like solar PV some seven years ago.”

“We believe in transitioning to a clean energy economy and want to promote the uptake of this new technology. We understand that batteries will play an important role in our transition to a clean energy economy, helping maintain system security, reliability, and affordability.”

“These new rules will clarify how batteries and additional generation can work within the Solar Bonus Scheme remaining consistent with the original intent of the scheme,” he said.

“The Palaszczuk Government will continue to honour the commitment made to Queenslanders who have taken up the Solar Bonus Scheme, but what we don’t want to see is some people taking advantage of new technology in a way that isn’t consistent with the original intent of the scheme.”

Mr Bailey said under changes to the (Batteries and Premium Feed In Tariff) Amendment Bill 2017 customers who receive the 44c FiT and want to add extra systems or batteries must:

check with their distributor before adding extra systems or batteries

only use extra systems and batteries at times when the system receiving the 44c/kWh FiT is not operating – at night or during times of grid outage

The additional systems or batteries can’t export to the grid.

On June 2, it was announced that Japanese electronics giant Panasonic had reached an agreement with three Australian energy utilities to trial its home-based battery storage options.

Dynalec Renewable Energy was appointed to install the first Panasonic battery in Albany Creek, Queensland as part of the Energex Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) trial. Dynalec were also involved in the first phase of the market-based trial installing LG Chem lithium-iron batteries throughout homes in Brisbane.

The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) trials are the latest installment as part of an initiative by @annastaciamp to better understand the best way to integrate new technologies into the network. Ms Palaszczuk said “the trial, using technology from leading solar companies, would further cement Queensland’s reputation as a leader in the rooftop solar industry. The trial will be instrumental in assisting Energex with integrating renewable energy into South East Queensland’s network”.

Energex uses the data from these trials to gain awareness on how customers configure and use battery systems and to study the effects of batteries on peak demand and power quality.

“New technologies like solar battery storage will dominate the next phase of the solar energy industry, and with it a whole new opportunity for new jobs,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

Panasonic battery trial Brisbane

The Panasonic 5.3kWh lithium-ion battery storage system has been designed specifically for the Australian market. Dynalec’s Director said “The battery and inverter are both combined in one steel housing system which creates ease of installation due to Panasonics all in one design”. The installation was a two step process, the exisiting solar PV system was firstly updated to current regulations followed by the installation of the Panasonic battery. To ensure longevity of the battery, it was installed out of the elements under the customers south facing balcony.

Panasonic battery trial Brisbane

Panasonic has made 10 billion lithium-ion battery cells for a range of applications. They provide battery cells for the Tesla Model S electric vehicle and they are the partner cell provider for Tesla’s Gigafactory.

Energy Minister Mark Bailey has said “We have some of the best solar resources in the world and because of that reputation, each of these suppliers has earmarked Queensland as target markets for their products,”

The Governments has a goal of one million rooftops in Queensland by 2020. The emergence of Battery Energy Storage Systems will play a key role in achieving that goal.

Elon Musk joined 30 United States Governors at the National Governors Association Summer Meeting in Rhode Island on Saturday to discuss how it would be possible to power the nation with solar energy.

“If you wanted to power the entire U.S. with solar panels, it would take a fairly small corner of Nevada or Texas or Utah; you only need about 100 miles by 100 miles of solar panels to power the entire United States,” Musk said. “The batteries you need to store the energy, to make sure you have 24/7 power, is 1 mile by 1 mile. One square-mile. That’s it.”

Currently, only 10-15% of the U.S’s power comes from renewable energy sources. “People talk about fusion and all that, but the sun is a giant fusion reactor in the sky. It’s really reliable. It comes up every day. If it doesn’t we’ve got bigger problems.”

Musk firstly discussed the possibility of combining rooftop solar on residential homes and utility-scale solar plants. Such as the large-scale solar plants seen in Australia.

Following this, during the transition from fossil fuel to solar, it would be necessary to rely on other renewables. “We’ll need to be a combination of utility-scale solar and rooftop solar, combined with wind, geothermal, hydro, probably some nuclear for a while, in order to transition to a sustainable situation,” Musk explained.

Lastly, the U.S. would need to build more localized power sources, like the rooftop solar setups. “People do not like transmission lines going through their neighbourhood, they really don’t like that, and I agree,” Musk said. “Rooftop solar, utility solar; that’s really going to be a solution from the physics standpoint. I can really see another way to really do it.”

If complete renewable energy power is achieved in the U.S. this would wipe out around 1,821 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions currently produced by the country’s electric power sector — 35 percent of the overall CO2 energy-related emissions in the U.S.

With just over a week since we installed one of the first Tesla Powerwall 2’s on the Gold Coast and the results are in – Powerwall 2 has exceeded our initial forecasts. The first few days post install, our Mermaid Waters customers solar PV and Powerwall 2 provided 98-99% of his energy usage with only a 1% reliance on the grid. We had initially forecast for a 5-10% reliance on the grid so these results were extremely promising. With a few days of mixed weather and family holidaying at the residence, the reliance on the grid did increase slightly and the customer was able to see this change via the Tesla App.

Via the Tesla App, the customer has real time streaming on the performance of the battery. Michael the lead installer for this project said “Being one of the first Powerwall 2’s to be installed on the Gold Coast we’ve been motioning this battery regularly with interest so we have a deeper understanding of its capabilities”.

The customer is able to adjust the energy reserve of the battery via the “customise” option in the App to suit his energy trends.

The Power Flow function provides a visual representation of how much energy is firstly generated by the solar panels, where that energy flows to in the home and lastly how much is sent to and from the Powerwall. This function will also show the power exported or imported from the grid.
